Meet the Officers

Emily Bautista

Major: Materials Science and Engineering
Graduation date: May 2019

My main responsibility as the President of SWE is to ensure our organization is running smoothly throughout the year! This includes supporting the executive board and chairs in their own tasks or events as well as collaborating with company sponsors to plan meaningful professional development events. I also interface with the society to maintain our sections good standing.

About me personally, after graduation I cannot wait to get a cat! And also, a career within the manufacturing realm. When I have free time, I love knitting and listening to podcasts (mainly at the same time)! I also enjoy going to cultural/music events whenever possible and hiking as weather permits. I am SWE crazy, so if anyone is ever interested in learning about SWE beyond our colliegate section, I am your SWEester!

Erica O'Donnel
Vice President

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Minors: Green Engineering, Music
Graduation date: May 2019

As the Vice President of SWE, I coordinate with our sponsors and other organizations to plan our biweekly general body meetings (GBMs). These meetings help our members develop as engineers, be empowered as women in STEM, and have fun connecting with their fellow engineering students! I am always looking for new ways to improve our SWE section, both by helping our other officers and leading new initiatives.

I am passionate about the environment and would love to start a career in renewable energy. I also have developed a love of research through my undergraduate research and my latest internship. Outside of SWE and engineering, I have been a member of several of the campus music ensembles and have had the opportunity to perform around the country (including at the Battle at Bristol and at Carnegie Hall!). In my free time, I also love to read and to hike.

Julie Duetsch

Major: Aerospace Engineering
Minor: Mathematics
Graduation date: May 2019

As SWE@VT treasurer, I maintain the chapter's annual budget, invoicing, and banking management. It's my job to make sure that all SWE members are properly reimbursed after spending on our chapter's events and that our chapter complies with tax code. I have also previously held the positions of Vice President and Evening with the Industries Chair within SWE@VT.

Outside of SWE, I am a senior in aerospace engineering and will be pursuing a career in aircraft aerodynamics. After I graduate with my B.S. in May 2019, I will be completing my M.S. in aerospace engineering in May 2020 through the Aerospace and Ocean Engineering Department's accelerated B.S./M.S. program. Outside of classes and extracurricular activities, I enjoy painting, hiking, and reading.

Morgan Newcomb

Major: Civil Engineering
Minors: Green Engineering, Civic Agriculture and Food Systems
Graduation date: May 2021

Currently secretary for our chapter, I work on assisting in the management of meetings when it comes to attendance and meeting minutes amongst a few other tasks for the Executive Board.

Concentrating in Land Development and Green Infrastructure, my future passions lie in urban redevelopment with integrated green spaces. I hope to pursue a doctorate and go back to school to teach after working in the industry. Currently, I am a part of the Baja SAE here at Virginia Tech, a design team in the Ware Lab that aims to manufacture off-road buggies for competition and reinforce the engineering design process.
