Meet the Officers

Ashlyn Pugh
President

Major: Electrical Engineering
Graduation date: May 2021

As President, I oversee the growth of the section and coordinate the efforts of all of the SWE officers. My responsibilities include supporting the executive board and chairs in their own tasks or events and collaborating with company sponsors to plan meaningful professional development events. My main goal in this position is to provide members with value added events to help them grow and succeed in their academic and professional careers.

In addition to SWE, I am a member of the Student Alumni Associates, where I serve as Vice President of Alumni Relations, and am a member of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. While SWE and these other organization keep me busy, I still try to find time for my other hobbies outside of school. I love hiking, droning, playing piano, and cheering on my Hokies! My current career plan is to earn a Masters degree in engineering and, afterwards, work for an organization who is pushing the boundaries of the technological innovations of the 21st century.

Morgan Newcomb
Vice President

Major: Civil Engineering
Minors: Civic Agriculture and Food Systems
Graduation date: May 2021

Currently VP for our section, I work on assisting the President as well as running the General Body Meetings!

Concentrating in Land Development and Green Infrastructure, my future passions lie in urban redevelopment with integrated green spaces. I hope to pursue a doctorate and go back into academia in order to teach after working in the industry. Currently, I am a part of the Baja SAE Team here at Virginia Tech, a design team in the Ware Lab that aims to manufacture off-road buggies for competition and reinforce the engineering design process.

Annelise Wright
Treasurer

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Graduation date: May 2021

As SWE@VT treasurer, I maintain the section's annual budget, invoicing, and banking management. It's my job to make sure that all SWE members are properly reimbursed after spending on our section's events and that our section complies with tax code. Before this, I was the SWE SEC Chair for SWE@VT.

Besides SWE, and homework, I enjoy taking part in service projects and am currently an active participant in the service club CKI here at Virginia Tech. We do anything from give out candy to young kids on Halloween to having Drunk Bake Sales which benefit charity. Also, I learned from my internship, that I really enjoy making trucks. Since this is newfound knowledge to me, I now plan on heading into manufacturing after I graduate, specifically automotive manufacturing.

Kathryn Wittek
Secretary

Major: Ocean Engineering
Minors: Naval Architecture & Theater Arts
Graduation date: May 2022

As SWE@VT secretary, I am in charge of attendance and meeting minutes for our General Body Meetings as well as officer meetings. Along with this, I am the communication bridge between SWE Officers and all of our members with weekly emails and information about or section. I also serve on the Executive Board to make important SWE decisions and make sure that our section is managed efficiently.

Beyond SWE, I love to play tennis, do fun DIY projects, and cheer on my Hokies at any event (specifically basketball)! Outside of engineering, I enjoy anything from outdoor adventures and travelling the world to attending theater shows done by VT. My current career plan is to finish college and then work for either a naval architecture firm or an ocean research institute to design watercraft to further explore our oceans. Go Hokies!

Shannon Woolfolk
SEC Chair

Major: Electrical Engineering

As the Student Engineering Council (SEC) Chair I am responsible for being the link between SEC and SWE. I keep SWE members updated on engineering events, like Engineering Expo, request the necessary funds SWE needs for events, and provide SWE with any information from the Student Engineering Council. I attend SEC meetings as a SWE member to keep SWE connected with the rest of the engineering community.

Outside of that, I just completed a two-week study abroad which has motivated me to travel more. Reading and running relax me and I value giving back to the community through outreach. I can't wait to see how SWE continues to impact more Hokies.

Julianna Jones
Evening with the Industries Chair

Major: Industrial and Systems Engineering
Graduation date: May 2021

As the EWI Chair, my role involves planning, executing, and marketing the annual Evening with the Industries event. This event involves a partnership with the CAMEO CareerFest, hosted each year to provide opportunities for Virginia Tech engineers to engage with incredible companies.

Outside of SWE, I serve as the Secretary of the Class of 2021 where I actively support Class Systems through the many ring traditions. I also work at the Career Center as a Peer Career Advisor where I assist students in the career planning process. Additionally, I am also involved with ISE Ambassadors, Student Alumni Associates, and Relay for Life. In my free time, I enjoy yoga, running, skiing, and hiking! This past summer, I spent interning with GE Power as a materials and production intern in Greenville, South Carolina. This fall 2019, I'll be co-oping at Walt Disney World as an industrial engineer! Go Hokies!

Megan Schneider
Social Committee Chair

Hello! My name is Megan and I am going into my fourth year (out of five!) at Virginia Tech, and my fourth year being a member of SWE. My job as the Social Committee Chair is to plan and execute social events for our members. This year, I want to to help "SWE Members" become "SWEsters" by getting people together for fun and inclusive social gatherings. I have a lot big ideas for this year, but I'm also interested in yours. If you have any events that you would like to see on SWE's social calendar, or if you want to join the Social Committee (YAY!) please do not hesitate to reach out.

A little about me... I have a lot of different hobbies like playing guitar, painting, and making YouTube videos. To stay in shape, I like to run and do yoga. Right now I am really into true crime, but by the time you read this, I may be into something different! One thing I am always passionate about is the importance of STEM educational outreach for young women. If it weren't for one of those programs, I wouldn't be where I am today.

Sarah Loomis
Community Outreach Chair

Major: Biological Systems Engineering
Minors: Environmental Science, Public and Urban Affairs
Graduation date: May 2022

As Community Outreach chair, I am responsible for providing SWE members with a service platform through local organizations where they can go into the greater Blacksburg community and make a difference. I help plan our presence at events such as O-Show, Gobblerfest, the Big Event, and Hypatia Preview Weekend.

When I graduate, I hope to do research for environmental health projects, especially to remediate water pollution. I currently do water quality undergraduate research with the Civil Engineering department. I also work in the library’s 3D Design Studio. Outside of SWE and engineering, I am an active member of UKirk campus ministry, and I love hiking, cooking, photography, and making lots of Spotify playlists.

Katelyn Ragan
Publicity Chair

Major: Aerospace Engineering

I serve as the Publicity Chair for the Virginia Tech Chapter of SWE. In this role, I maintain Virginia Tech's social media accounts which include Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Be sure to look us up on there! I also advertise the organization to the general public and am in charge of making posters for specific events within the organization.

Outside of SWE, I love being active! I am a member of an intramural wallyball team and can often be found at the beach volleyball courts! I also love running, and Blacksburg is perfect for it! I love reading and binge watching shows on Netflix. Most of all, I love just hanging out with friends and going on little adventures. I plan to major in Aerospace Engineering and want to pursue a career in the defense industry.

CAMEO Representative

Hello! My name is Amy Han, and I'm the CAMEO representative for SWE. I'm responsible for creating the signage for the CAMEO career fair, which is the umbrella organization for minority engineering societies. I aim to work in a food sustainable or environment related company as an industrial engineer.

Marielle Buchy
Educational Outreach Chair

As Education Outreach Chair, I am able to connect SWE@VT with the local community by planning events such as Brownie Day, Girl Scout Day and other K-12 events! These events help SWE give children the opportunity to explore STEM with hands-on activities.

During my free time, I enjoy reading, hiking, playing field hockey/soccer, and going to VT sporting events! Go Hokies!

Gulnaz Sayed
Conference Chair

As Conference Chair, it is my responsibility to budget and organize any VT SWE trips to national conferences. The next national conference SWE at Virginia Tech will attend is WE19, the world’s largest conference for female engineers. I attended WE18 during the last academic year and am ecstatic to represent Virginia Tech at the largest SWE conference again this year in Anaheim, CA!

Beyond SWE, I am interested in the intersection between computer science and entrepreneurship, with the hopes of pursuing an MBA after my undergraduate career. I am currently working on data science related projects and hope to continue in the software engineering field upon graduation. In my free time, I like to read, bullet journal, travel, and spend quality time with family/friends!

Payton Moore
SWE Abroad Chair

Major: Engineering Science and Mechanics
Minor: Spanish
Graduation date: May 2022

As SWE Abroad Chair, I am organizing and fundraising SWE’s second outreach abroad trip. In January 2019, I was part of a group of three SWE members and two employees for the Center for Enhancement of Engineering Diversity (CEED) who travelled to Blatyre, Malawi, to encourage girls to pursue engineering or STEM. We talked about what engineers do and why engineers are needed in the workplace. I am planning a similar trip for next year.

Outside of SWE, I am active in intramural sports and enjoy playing sports casually. I like reading, board games, and any outdoors activity. I love listening to music (especially hip hop and rock) and going to concerts!
