Students

Here's what we've done so far this year. Stay tuned for more exciting events!

Girl Scout Day

This past Spring, SWE hosted local Girl Scouts aging from 6th-12th grade to learn more about STEM as a whole. For this event, a small career fair was held where the girls could walk around and talk to design teams, engineering departments, and departments from the College of Science, College of Natural Resources, College of Agriculture, and the College of Architecture. After the STEM fair, the girls split into their age groups and worked with SWE and the Hybrid Electric Vehicle Team at VT to work towards their Think Like an Engineer Badge! This past year was a great hit for the girls and we cannot wait for next year!

SWE Abroad Spring 2019

We just went to Malawi! To learn more, go to the "SWE Abroad" tab on this website.

Women's March in DC

Right before spring semester kicked off, a few of our SWEsters represented women in engineering at the Women's March in DC!

WE'18 National Conference

The SWE National Conference in Minneapolis, MN was a great learning experience for our SWEsters! There were loads of technical workshops, professional development events, and even more. We hope to bring many more of our members to the next conference in Anaheim, CA in 2019!

Brownie Day

Each Fall, Girl Scout Brownies are invited to join SWE at VT for a fun-filled day of STEM activities. The Brownies in attendance complete small activities based on math and science to earn a badge. This past Fall the girls learned about propulsion and structure with marshmallow catapults and the science behind the phases of the moon with Oreos! This is a great way for SWE members to get involved with helping young girls pursue STEM and give back to the community.

S2S Challenge

Pictured below are 8 SWEsters who volunteered for the Roanoke Valley Fall Waterway Cleanup! They picked up trash along the greenway in Salem and managed to collect 10 BAGS OF TRASH (plus a tire)!

Our SWE section is participated in S2S, a district challenge where SWE sections and members give back to society by volunteering their time to community organizations or charities. S2S's objective is to turn ideas into a positive real-world impact.

SWE General Body Meeting!

Thank you to all of the girls who came out to our second meeting of the semester. Also, a big shout-out goes to Altria, NAVAIR, Leidos, Westrock, Texas Instruments, Micron, RGi, and Textron for coming to give our members Engineering Expo advice. We can't wait for the next meeting!

Gobbler Fest

Thank you to everyone who came out to our booth at Gobbler Fest! We really enjoyed getting to meet all of the girls (and a couple boys) who came to check out who we are at Tech. We look forward to seeing you at our meetings.

Renew the New

In preparation of the new school year, the SWE officers participated in Renew the New. Renew the New is a big volunteer effort to clean the New River. We are always looking for more service events and participants to help our local community!

WE'17 National Conference

The SWE National Conference in Austin, TX last year was a blast. It was filled with technical and non-techinal talks, networking, and SWE-ster bonding. We hope to bring even more of our members to the conference in Minneapolis, MN this year.
